Going Backwards - March 09

Posted by Danielle

In March, Owen turned 6 months old. He slept ALL the time and was so quiet and calm. Liam was 2 1/2, and was beginning to talk like an adult. Liam, Owen and I flew down to Kentucky to show off Owen to my sister and her family. It was very scary for me flying with 2 kids by myself, but I survived. It wasn't the best experience, but we made it.

We started the trip with Liam's first Dentist appointment.
Liam did awesome and wasn't even scared.
No cavaties! (He better never have any!!)

Next was the Louisville Zoo
Ben and Liam were best buddies...the whole day they kept calling eachother "best buddies"and giving eachother hugs! I hope they are always this good of friends.
Liam trying to read a map...
Elephants...
Owen slept through almost all of it...I feel bad I didn't take more picture of him, but he was asleep most of the trip to the zoo....
Gorillas

We went to the Science Center in downtown Louisville....
Aren't these eyes just perfect?
Cowboy Ben
Liam getting all wet...
then drying off...
Owen watching the kids play...

Anaconda...
My favorite cowboy...he is just so cute!
SURPRISE
My sister Jen's 30th Birthday Party
About a month before Jen's birthday, I called her husband Matt and we figured out a plan to surprise Jen for her 30th birthday. Matt volunteered the help of one of Jen's best friends, Becky, and together we planned an American Idol themed party. Becky was great! She did everything that I was not able to do living locally. Matt was in charge of getting Jen out of the house and back for the party.
Here is Meg and Liam peeking out the front door waiting for Jen and Matt to pull up!
So, what is Liam holding in the picture? Well, imagine unexpectedly walking into a house full of people, each person holding a picture of your face over their face; you walk in to seeing 30 of your faces all over the room....surprise....ya, that was just something my little sister Kaity and I planned for the party. We thought it would be so funny! So, I made each face personally!
Jen still has some somewhere....
Matt and Jen (and baby Jake)
Liam
Best couzins...
American Idol birtday cake...
American Idol Wii karaoke...

Jen's solo...
The party was a success!! We had a ton of fun and she definately was surprised, or at least she acted like she was! Meg was so excited to be a part of planning and decorating for the big day! She reminds me often that she keeps secrets well, and she definately does! I think it is so neat for her to make memories like this. I still remember planning my mom's 30th birthday party with my sister Jen and my dad. Jen was 10 and I was 8. My dad asked us to make a cake for my mom's surprise party, but we ran out of frosting. I remember my dad mixing peanut butter into the frosting so we would have enough....I don't know why that detail sticks out to me so much, but so many of my mom's friends kindly told us how good the cake was. It just makes me laugh!
Later that night, Liam got a hold of my camera. I found these pictures (along with many others) the next day...
I guess he was attempting a self-portrait...
and he made sure to snap a shot of his baby brother sleeping too...
Park....
It was March, but it was perfect weather to go to the park. Owen LOVED the swings...he would get a huge smile and kick his legs every time he would go back.

Brothers...

Me and Owen...
Aren't his lips just so kissable...I love them!
Ben...cowboy again.
Funny story about Ben. He pushed Liam down at the park this day, and Liam was so upset by it. His mom gave him a time out...he said sorry to Liam, and it was over and done with.
It is now 6 months later and Liam tells me this story at least once a week. We will be playing with playdough, or sitting in the car, whenever he wants a little symphathy, and he tells me, "Ben pushed me" and I will ask him, "he did? when?", then Liam will go on, "in the park....and his mom made him sit in time out..." I tell him Ben is sorry, and then its over with....but Liam just won't forget about that story. I don't know if it a good sign of a great memory, or a bad sign that he is holding grudges....I guess we will see....
I love this picture...
Ben and Zac
(I think I reason I don't have more pictures of Ben and Zac together is because they are like oil and water....really, they do not get along at all...at least in this picture, they have a tree between them so no biting or hitting happening here...)
Ben
So that is the end of my Kentucky trip photos....
___________________________________________
This picture is supposed to represent Owen rolling over for the first time...He rolled over one way from back to front at 6 months old.
It also represents how much Liam adores playing with his little brother. He is an amazing big brother to him and loves to play with him and entertain him!
Silly Faces
I was doing my make-up one day and Liam was wanting me to put some on him...so here is Liam's make-up....
He asked me to do it every day for a few weeks after I did it this time...he loved it...

Dr. Pushpa
In March, Dr. Pushpa from the Marshall Islands came to visit us in New York. She is from Nepal, but works in the Marshall Islands at the hospital. We got to know her well through our Attorney over there and even went to her house for dinner. We had kept in touch and she called us when she got to the US to take her Medical test to become a Doctor over here. She was in Oklahoma, but bought a ticket to come see us for a week. It was so awesome to have her visit. We did A LOT of shopping, brought her to Niagra falls, and she taught me how to make real chicken curry, which is one of my new favorite foods! She is one of the most amazing people I have ever met and her stories are so intriguing!
I really miss her and hope she comes back soon!
More Liam photography...
A day at the park with Daddy...

Owen was in the Baby Bjorn all bundled up...he was not used to the cold NY temp's after being in the Marshall Islands his whole life! He is just so precious!

Pancake Day...
I saw on Rachael Ray's cooking show one day a neat way to make pancakes. You take an old Ketchup bottle (cleaned) and put pancake batter in it. You just draw your pancakes into the pan, and wa la...I made Liam pakcakes with his name....He thought they were so neat, he didn't want to eat them....it took some convincing!
Hoping to post April through Semptember soon!!

Favorites from February

I have been a total blog slacker since we got back from the Marshall Islands. Time has flown by and I have so many pictures to post...so here I go...I am really just going to post my favorites, so enjoy!
Body Art
Liam developed his love for painting and art...

Ghetto sleeping...
don't ask me why...I don't know, but this is how I found him...
Valentines Day with Owen.
Liam's girlfriend's (Natalie) older sister watched Liam on Valentines Day while we went out with Owen on a date! We had only been home for a few weeks and I was not ready to leave him with a babysitter yet! We went to the Outback.
A picture I found on my camera...Ryan took this from the top of the Windmills that he worked on in Cohocton, NY...
This is what a New York winter looks like from 300 feet up...
I think this was the day where his truck had gotten stuck in the snow. The tractor couldn't pull him out, so he had to walk down the road in the snow to where someone could get to him. His truck was stuck for three-days before they could dig it out....good times!

Washington, DC

Posted by Danielle

We went to Washington, DC with my sister Jen and her family over Memorial Day. We were still living in NY when we went, so it was about a 5-hour drive for us. Jen found us an awesome hotel and we had a great time! Unfortunately, halfway through the trip I dropped, and broke, my camera at the Zoo, so I don't have too many pictures...

They aren't in a perfect order like my sister's blog...but here is the basics...hey...at least I am blogging again, right?

WWII Memorial

This memorial was new since the last time I went to DC at Jen's wedding...it has been a long time...

I don't know why Liam was doing the peace sign...but it was fitting...
Liam and Ryan

I took these next pictures becuse they actually mean something to me now. Since adopting Owen, I have ben so much more aware of the history of the people in the Pacific at the time of WWII. The Marshallese people were affected so badly by the war, many were displaced from their islands, and others suffered long term illnesses from the nuclear testing that was done over there....
anyway...

Kwajalein is in the Marshall Islands. The Japanese occupied the Marshall Islands until WWII, where the US Military defeated the Japanese and took over.

Washington Memorial
White House...we watched this helicoptor take off and land like 20 times...
Museum of Natural History
Ryan and his buddies.
Liam copying the skeletons..
Most of the kids...Owen is in the back seat, and Jake is in Jen's arms...
My cute husband and baby...
My awesome stroller...
All of us at the ZOO....this is the last picture my camera took before I dopped it!

We had an awesome vacation with Jen, Matt, Meg, Ben, Zac, and Jake! I wish all our vacations could be this much fun!

My Little Artist

Posted by Danielle

I have been collecting my favorites of Liam's artwork for the past year and it has been piling up on my refridgerator doors. (I remember when I was a kid, my dad would save all our schoolwork and stuff and bind it all together into a book; I still have the one from my 3rd grade year.) I wanted to keep all of Liam's adorable pictues, so scanning them seemed like the most practical way to do so! I absolutely love watching him develop his skills and coodination while drawing and writing. He went from scribbling to drawing little people...he is so cute! Here are some of my favorites!

Most of these pictures are of his Daddy. His favorite things to draw are his daddy, himself, and dinosaurs....yes, he LOVES dinosaurs.

Liam's quote of the day...

Posted by Danielle

(Not Liam in the picture...just something I found on google)

This morning I was talking to Liam after watching a show on the disney channel about careers like firemen, doctors, etc....

Me: Liam, what do you want to be when you grow up?

Liam: A GIANT Eyeball (said with much enthusiasm and arm gestures)!!!

Me: Wow...you'll be a good eyeball...
Liam also has a new talent--cup stacking. He carries about 20-25 blue plastic cups around the house all day and stacks them everywhere. He learned it from Yo Gabba Gabba...it's is one of hs many "cool tricks" that he has learned from this show...his others include balancing a spoon on his nose, break dancing, and doing a headstand...

Funny Boy

Posted by Danielle

Liam has such a strong personality lately and does the funniest things. I thought I would post a few things so I wouldn't forget about them...

He is adament that his straw has to match the color of his cup/yogurt/drink. He will flip out if he has a red Dannimals yogurt and I give him a green straw.

He sings along with every single song we hear. He like repeats the last word and mumbles the rest. The other day I was out to lunch with some friends and the song "Poker Face" was on the radio, and he was totally singing it....kinda funny. But once he hears the song once, he like totally knows it.

He has the greatest memory ever. He will tell me everything his cousins Ben and Zac have ever done to him over and over again. We were at my sisters about 6 months ago and Ben pushed him down at the playground. We will just be going about our normal day, and he will come up to me and tell me, "Ben pushed me down on the playground" and get sad about it and I will have to tell him that Ben is sorry and that he got a time out for it. Its really the same stories over and over, that one about Ben and then about Zac telling him "no".....

He has such an amazing imaginationand can play with his cars/train/toys forever by himself! He has the funniest conversations between his toys.

He LOVES nursery and just started preschool last week. I thought he would have a hard time with it, but he was so sad when I came to pick him up...he wanted to stay and play with the kids!

He is SUCH a great big brother and will do anything for Owen. He plays so well with him and just loves babying him!

Anyway, these things have been on my mind. He is growing up so fast and I wanted to write down some things since I have been so bad at blogging!

Going to get Owen - Last Post

Posted by Danielle

So here are the last photos from our trip to the Marshall Islands....or should I say the last pictures tht I am going to post. I still have like a thousand more, but these are my favorites and show our experience pretty well. I cannot belive it took me this long to post them all...I used to be really good at blogging....but apparently, that is not the case any mre.I am glad I finally finished them.
Week 3
December 14th - 20th, 2008
These pictures we took the night after Owen's baby blessing. I love, love, love, his big eyes and his long eyelashes.

Here is Liam being a little bit jealous of the attention I am giving Owen....he had to get in on it too...
After bath time...
Mommy and Owen
He had the cutest smile/ (He is 3 1/2 months in all these pictures)
So happy!
I love how sweet he looks here.
Scenery around Majuro...Laundry day...
December 15th...My birthday...I already posted about how great my birthday was, but that evening, there was a traffic jam which was very strange for Majuro...there really was no reason. After sitting here...
...for 25 minutes, we turned around and went back to our hotel. The next morning, we found out what had happened is that the ocean flooded from the ocean side all the way across to the lagoon side. It washed away many families homes and the road was under water. For a good week there was very bad flooding because of storms in the Pacific....Typhoon Dolphin as well as the posistion of the moon; how close it was to the earth. We were told the moon was the closest to the earth as it has been in a long time....but this was a very uncommon event in the Marshall Islands.
This was the view the next day....
There was garbag all over the road that had washed in from the ocean. People were out cleaning for days and trying to repair all that was damaged. The Marshall Islands declared a state of emergency and received aid from the U.S. for repairs and emergency relief.

Later that day, we brought our birthmother, Glorina to the Tide Table restaurant for lunch. We also met the missionaries that had stopped by our hotel the week before. My mother is friends with the Elder on the left's Aunt in NH, so we told her that we would check on him and get him some good food....we did. We let them use our computers for the free internet so ther did not have to go to the NTA and wait in line to e-mail their families. Elder Stone, the one on the left had the best accent. We was from Austrailia and I loved hearing him talk.
Glorina feeding Owen.
Glorina was so sweet to Owen. She fed him, walked him around outside until he fell asleep. It was obviously that she loved him so much and really enjoyed spending time with him. We are so lucky to have her in our lives!

Scenery on our drive....a cemetary in Majuro. Their cemetaries are beautiful and very peaceful. I love how every stone is white.

More scenery pictures....Christmas lights on the palm trees...festive...
We took at least 10 pictures a day of Owen, so I know I am just posting random pictures, but they were all on different days.
Lunch at the Tide Table.
This was how we rode in the car (and as only Juli would witness, I drove like this as well a few times: it's legal in the Marshall Islands).
Later that week, we met the Dunn family in Laura to snorkel and spear fish. Or attempted to spear fish. Ryan made sure to have his knife on his leg in case he ran into any sharks...ya right...like he would have time to take it out. Lucily he didn't see any...

But he did see this and put som use to our underwater camera...
Liam had a blast in the sand and shallow waters.
Owen soaked up the sun...
and fell asleep...
December 19th...we experienced the Majuro hospital. Owen's finger was extremely swollen and infected and we needed medicine for him. Thankfully our amazing attorney Gordon was there to help us and he introduced us to Dr. Pushpa. She got us the medication that we needed and even gave us more for Glorina's brother who had pink eye. Dr. Pushpa made a few other housecalls for us throughout our stay. She was amazing as well! The hospital was pretty crazy. I would not want to be sick there. A man died while we were there and when we were leaving they just had his dead body lying in the entryway on a gurney for everyone to see.

Part of a journal entry dated December 17th, 2008...
"We pretty much have just hung out for the past few days. We haven't done much really but bond with Owen and get used to a baby again. He is absolutely precious, adorable, sweet, and amazing. He is such a wonderful litle boy. He is so calm and laid back. He will just hang out all day on your lap. He loves to be held and especially loves the ocean. If he cries, we just watch out on the porch facing the ocean and he stops crying immediately... he sleep so much I kinda wait for him to wake up so I can play with him..."
Who wouldn't feel this way about this adorable baby!!

Party Time
Glorina's family had a big party for us. Both Ryan and Glorina's Bubu were flying out in the next week, so they invited us over for the most memorable time.

They sang Marshallese songs to us, which I video taped. They did not have electricity, so we brought our few flashlights from our hotel room and they had a few candles. It was a party in the dark, but it was the most humble and loving party I could have ever gone too.
Every person that came to the party, relatives of Owen, friends, and distant relatives, presented me with a gift. I was given so many pairs of Marshallese earrings, shells, hats that Bubu made for us, necklaces....it was so special!!!
She is putting a necklace on me that she made.
This is Glorina's mom giving me some earrings. Glorina's Bubu made this hat for me.

Playing the ukelele and singing...
Glorina's other Grandmother had made this sign for us! Yokwe is the standard greeting in Marshallese meaning welcome, and love!

Bubu and Camilla, her cousin and our adoption representative on the island.
The kids...
I adore this picture of Glorina and Owen. She looks so happy and pretty.
I wish I could upload the videos of that night, but they are so long and would take up too much time. We really had an amazing time. We had made cookies the day before to bring to the party while at the Dunn's cottage, and everyone ate them gladly. We brought gifts for her family as well. We bought Bubu a new dress, Glorina several skirts, dresses, and some things I brought from home, like Bath and Body Works lotions for everyone else. I taught all the children how to play ring-around-the-rosie. They had so much fun! It was a great night!
The next day we saw Bubu off at the aiport. She is from Jaluit, but came over to Majuro with Glorina to help Glorina with Owen until we came to adopt him.
Outside the airport...

Glorina and Owen
Bubu saying goodbye to Owen. She loves him so much and always had this huge smile whenever she would hold him!

Bubu actually didn't make it out that day. The flight ended up being cancelled and she left the next day....that is quite common with Air Marshall Islands we found out!

Christmas Pictures:
We brought matching pajamas for Christmas. I tried to get my boys together for a Christmas picture to email to our friends and family to wish them all a Merry Christmas.

This is the shot we used:
And here are the ones we didn't use:
Liam was so cute...

Owen wasn't really that happy about it, but I LOVE his faces in these pictures...

At least Owen is smiling in one...
These photos were taken at the beach behind our hotel. It was very convenient to have it right out our door and the water was always perfect.

Liam played with this shell forever...
Christmas Eve.
We went to a Christmas program with Gordon. It was really awesome. There was singing, Marshallese dancing, and every group of people there had their own song to perform. Gordon invited us to sign with their group, which represented all the American's. They gave us these shirts to wear so we matched everyone else and sang up front with them. I wish we had a picture of that....

Chrismas Day
I went shopping by myself on Christmas Eve when all three of my boys were sleeping. I bought Liam a fish game, and Ryan a Marshall islands t-shirt for Christmas. I loved going into all the little local shops, but it totally felt weird to be alone for the first time...
Our Christmas tree on Christmas Morning.
Liam opening his Christmas gift...well, it wasn't wrapped, but, he was thrilled to have a toy...
We drove to the church that we attended the whole time we were in Majuro as they were putting on "Beat" all day. The Marshallese celebrate Christmas by dancing. Each church would do their own dance and perform in front of everyone. They travel around to different churches to do their "beat" and are dancing all day.
On our drive to the church, this is what we saw....
Some pigs...
Did he get his point accross?
Liam entertaining himself in the backseat...
Owen being festive...

This is how most church groups travelled around from church to church...in the back of a truck.
The cutest kids singing and dancing...
We probably video taped over an hour of dancing and singing for Owen, but this video here is my favorite...
I love the guys dance. Check out the little boy in the bottom of the video, he is the cutest...

After Beat, we went over to Gordon's house for Christmas dinner. He had the most amazing Indian food. He lives in a super cute home right on the water. His backyard is the Ocean....pretty amazing to wake up to that every day!! I miss it!

Here is Gordon's son and Owen. They are the same age...
So, the next day, we had met Annalina, the cutest little girl that was also looking for a family and we decided to meet her and see if there was any possibility that we supposed to be her family as well. Gordon had told us about her, and I really wanted her to be part of our family... Her and her grandmother were so cute and Annalina was full of smiles and giggles. She came home with us and really spent the next 2 1/2 weeks with us. (We thought there was a chance that we would be able to adopt her, but they would not let us adopt 2 kids at the same time, but we didn't find that out until after she had been with us for 2 weeks. I was sad for her, sooo sad for her and prayed every day that she would find a family....I just found out today, while looking at someone elses blog that she was just adopted last months and I was so happy I teared up! I loved this littl girl!).
So that was our morning. We meet the missionaries for lunch and they gave us some Cadbury chocoalte from Austrailia, from Elder Stone's family. They also spoke to Annalina for us as she did not speak any English. Annalina had pizza for the very first time and she ate 3 huge slices.
Ryan left that afternoon and I had the hardest time ever! Thanfully Gordon, Dr. Pushpa, and Glorina came with me to the airport to see him off. For the few days before he left I think I cried like every day thinking about it, but of course, I was crying at the airport. I was just scared to be there alone with 2 kids. Of course I survived and Annalina actually helped keep my mind off of Ryan being gone...
I didn't take hardly and pictures after Ryan left...but here are some that I did take...
Here is Annalina and Owen. Isn't she beautiful...
Lifeguard Liam...
Baby Kelen and Owen....Adoption day buddies...
We called the US Embassy in Manilla December 29th and found out the Embassy would be closed for an entire week for the Holidays...so that extended our trip at least another week...my reation, "oh, crap"....yes...I was not happy! I wanted to be with Ryan and be at home. Now I wish we could just go back and visit!!
Glorina and Owen in our hotel room. We gave her cab fare so she could come and visit whenever she wanted too and she came every day and even spent a few nights with me after Ryan left.
Liam loved Annalina. Her family called her Ka-Ka, so that is what she wanted us to call her too. They played so well together and she was so loving and sweet.
Annalina, Liam, and Owen
Dr. Pushpa had seen Annalina for me as I was concerned for her with the sores she had all over her body. Pushpa gave me an antibiotic as well as an topical cream to put on her 2x day as she had a bacteria infection in her skin and it was all over her body. Since her grandmother was unable to treat her due to their living conditions and zero electricity to keep the medication refridgerated, her grandmother wanted us to keep her with us until treatment was over. I gave her a bath every day and washed her wounds and put ointment and bandaids on them daily. She lookd like different child a week later and here sores were healing.
These are halfway healed...but these were all over her body....poor girl.
Here is Annalina and my boys. I bought her many new dresses and a purse, new shoes, and undies. I hope she felt loved and cared for, but I hope she wasn't too devistated when she found out we couldn't adopt her. Liam missed her when we got home. He kept asking where Ka-Ka was?
More after-bath pictures...

New Years Eve
Majuro, Marshall Islands

We went downtown with Juli and her brother-in-law Craig. It was laid back and relaxed, but very fun!
Laura with Glorina...
Before we left to come to the Marshall Islands, I had connected with a friend's friend whom had adopted from the Marshall Islands, and she wanted me to find her son's siblings. I tried to get in contact with them through their neighbors phone, but never had any success. Glorina offered to come with me one day to help me find them. It's about a 40 minute drive, and since Glorina speaks Marshallese, she was able to help me ask around and find them....
Here they are...
I gave them taxi money to come out the next day and I brought them shopping and to dinner. They were such sweet kids and seemed so happy!!
When we were out in Laura, we also got to stop and see Glorina's other grandmother. They just look so much alike.
This is the gas station that we stopped at. They had gas in water bottles...crazy...it was $6.50 per gallon.
LAST DAY
The end of our trip came faster than I thought. Looking back now, it was much faster than it seemed. The last few days I think Juli and I were miserable. We couldn't have gotten off that Island fast enought, but I really miss it and our birthfamily.
Glorina came by our hotel room right from school to spend time with us before we left for the aiport.
Here she is playing with Owen.
We said goodbye to Norman....
Ryan made good friends with Norman while we were there. He was staying at the hotel with us and had been stuck there the entire time we were there. The plane back to his island kept breaking so he couldn't go home...poor guy. Some nights, Ryan would be missing for like an hour and he was down in the lobby talking to Norman the whole time...
Liam actually took that picture of Norman....
That morning, I was sitting outside the Embassy right when they opened to get Owen's papers so we could go home! We couldn't leave without these papers...

Saying Goodbye!
So many people came to see us off. Glorina and most of her family was there. They made me the flower headband that I am wearing in these next pictures.
Glorina, Glorinda, and Owen right before we left...
Annalina and her grandmother came to say goodbye and gave me some necklaces that her grandmother made for us.
I was more in shock that we were actually leaving. One minute we were sitting there chatting with Glorina, the next minute, the airport workers were rushing us into a room so that we would be ready once the plane landed. Saying goodbye was very hard. I gave Glorina our cell phone so we could contact her, gave her a hug, told her we will miss her, and then we were off trough security. It was emotional and very hard to leave.

We had to wait in this room for like an hour while our plane was coming in.It was open to the runway, so I took some photos while we were waiting....
It was a like a 6 hour flight to Hawaii. The flight was horrible. Liam cried a lot as did Owen. I was so tired, I was delerious...we got to Hawaii at like 4:30 am, or something like that and had to wait over an hour for the US Immigration to look at our papers. Thankfully Juli and the Dunn family flew out on th same flight as I did and we all went through immigration together. The Dunn's helped me with my luggage and we stayed at the same hotel.
January 12th, 2009
Owen becomes a U.S. Citizens as a Immigration official stamps his passport....
now if that were the end...
we had 2 more days of flying and zero sleep before we got back in New York!!
I want to say that I love Owen with all my heart. I am so glad to be his mother and every second of this journey was amazing and brought us to the most amazing little boy!

We started the adoption process August 2008 and had our baby December 2008....Owen is our 2nd little miracle!!!

Going to Get Owen - Part 3

Posted by Danielle

Day 5 continued...
December 10th, 2008

I posted previously on our trip out to Laura beach. After our trip, we went to visit Glorina and her family.
Owen and Mommy
Glorina, Her little sister Delma, and Owen
Glorina was always so happy to see Owen when we come visit. She would take him and just walk around with him and hold him the entire time.

Bubu and Owen
(I love his Bubu...she was always so happy)

I was amazed at the skill that Glorina's family members have in making things. They were teaching me how to make baskets. Here Glorina great-aunt is making a Marshallese ball.

Pretty neat huh, she gave it to me and I have it in a keepsake box for Owen.

Liam playing with the one they made for him.
Making a flower.
I just had the most memorable time sitting there with these amazing women and spending time with them. Although there was a huge language barrier, I felt completely comfortable and didn't want to leave. They felt like family and they were so loving and skilled in making these amazing things with their hands. - I learned that they use the leaves from palm trees and smoke them to make them brown and dry.
While I was learning how to make Marshallese crafts, Liam was running around with the kids and Ryan outside. He had so much fun chasing the chickens and having the kids chase him. The kids that lived there LOVED Liam!

We brought Glorina shopping that afternoon and bought rice for her and her family. The price of rice in the Marshall Islands had recently tripled and was rising just as fast as the gas prices. I think we purchased 6 20 pound bags of rice for them as you can see in this next picture...
Chasing chickens around a fire....safe I know...

Baby pigs...

Some of the kids that lived in the same place as Owen did. I love these two. They were just so beautiful children.

This little boy was just sitting in this little room by himself and stole my heart. I just want to ho get him and hold him and take him home with us.
Cooking dinner.

Day 6
We found out Owen had scabies behind his ears, so we pretty much stayed in all day and did the cream scabies treatment. It gave me plenty of time to take a million picture of Owen though...

Enjoying brotherhood...
These are my FAVORITE photos of Owen. I love spiking his hair and he is just so cute anyway!

Day 7
End of Week 1
Scabies treatment work. They were completely gone in the morning. Scabies are little bugs that are basically under your skin. Owen's were behind his ears, and they look like little white bumps that itch very badly. Thankfully, no one else got scabies from Owen and he stopped scratching immediately. Unfortunately, it is extremely contageous, so Ryan spent most of the day running to the 4th floor to wash all the clothes Owen had touched with hot water to kill any further chance of spreading it.
We did our routine of going to the RRE Hotel for breakfast and our daily internet fix.I think if I remember correctly, 10am in the Marshall Islands was around 6 pm in New Hampshire....something like that.
We set up our little $2 Christmas tree and Liam spent hours playing with play-dough...our saving grace when we were over there. Play-dough entertains him for hours!

We were lucky to be there over Christmas. I purchased a ton of hand made Christmas ornaments so we could have our own Marshallese Christmas tree every year. Each has such incredible workmanship and are so beautiful!
The morning of the scabies treatment....He had to be covered from head to toe in a cream so this is how he stayed for 8 hours. He slept the whole time.
Christmas Parade
It was really neat to see how the Marshallese culture celebrates Christmas. I love that Christmas for them is a celebration to spend time together and just enjoy life. There is no presents really or any typical American festivities and it was the BEST Christmas we ever had.

This was the parade...all the city vehicles and police and a few other trucks of people...but the turnout was huge.

Week 2
Beach. Beach. and more beach.
The hotel had a private beach right outside our deck. The water was gorgeous and so warm!
Liam and Ryan behind out hotel.

Our hotel's beach
(The whole island is basically a beach though, so nothing unique for the Marshall Islands)
Swimming
Owen's FAVORITE sound is the sound of the Ocean. Whenever he would cry, we would just walk out our sliding door and listen to the waves from the beach below crash on the sand....so he just sat on my lap and listened to the water happily...
One happy Mommy!
My 28th Birthday
December 15th, 2008
These are my first pictures as a 28 year old....I turned 28 over there and it was my best birthday ever!! For my birthday, Ryan and Gordon arranged for me to get the most amazing massage I have ever had. Gordon's wife owns a salon near the RRE Hotel and has the most amazing lady from the Phillippenes there...Juli. the lady that adopted at the same time as we did and her friend Abby suprised me at dinner with cake and a great gift....best birthday ever....new baby, tropical island, and an hour massage....perfect!!!!!!!!!
Freeze Pops
Every time we went to see Glorina, which was almost every day, we tried to bring things for all the kids. Sometimes bubbles, candy,gum....today it was freeze pops. They don't have a freezer, or even electricity, so they don't really get a chance to eat these. We had a little fridge/freezer in our hotel, so we froze them and brought them over.
I love how some of them are wearing the clothes we brought.

Bubbles
I love, love, love these kids!!!! I often wonder how they are doing and wish I could have adopted them all!
Aren't they beautiful!
They love getting their pictures taken. It was so funny for them to see their picture on the playback mode of my camera. They would always laugh and seem suprised at what they looked like. But they didn't have mirrors where they lived, so maybe they just never saw themselves.
Owen's Blessing Day
Long Island Branch, LDS Church, Majuro, Marshall Islands
Owen's Bubu was leaving the next week to go back to Jaluit, another island and really wanted to be there for Owen's blessing. It was very special to have his birth family there for such a special day.
His great aunt Glorinda and his Bubu
Glorina looked beautiful.

Owen is 3 months old here in these pictures.

Mommy and Owen

I really did take almost 2000 pictures in the Marshall Islands. It is so hard for me to select which to upload, so that is why I have so many. But here is the 2nd week finally. 2 1/2 more weeks to post about, but that will be much quicker. Most of the big things happened in the first week.
To be continued (again).....

For Glorina!!!

I was so excited to hear from our Attorney in the Marshall Islands that he had Owen's Birthmother in his office and they were looking at my blog! They asked if I could put some videos of Owen up. (I have really been behind on my blogging and didn't realize that I didn't even have videos of him up yet) I am really excited for Glorina to see him!

Owen is 10 months old.

He weights 21.5 pounds

He has 5 teeth: 3 on the top, 2 on the bottom.

He says ma-ma, and da (for daddy)

He is pulling up and can stand for a long time holding on to something.

Glorina, Owen looks so much like you and reminds me of you often. He definately has your personality and is super laid back and happy all the time! We miss you Glorina!!!

I got the boys pictures done last week and was happy with how they turned out. My boys are getting big so fast and I am trying to cherish every moment I have with them. Owen is now 9 months old! We have had him for 6 months now...it seems like just yesterday that we went to go get him. Liam will be 3 in September and is just the smartest, most energetic little boy I know! They are the best and most amazing kids!! I love them more than anything!

Going to Get Owen - Part 2

Posted by Danielle

So, I posted Day 1 a month or so ago, and am finally getting around to finishing. Having 2 kids really takes up way more time and I just haven't been good at keeping up with my blog. To add to my Day 1 posting, I wanted to add part of a journal entry that I wrote that night that we first got to the Marshall Islands. I tried to keep a journal while we were over there because I did not have internet to blog, so I wrote my thoughts down in a notebook. Here it is...(its definately not well written, its just my thoughts at that time....I was extremely exhausted, so, I hope it makes sense).
...
December 7th, 2008: "Holy cow. Beautiful people but such poverty. Camilla showed up at our door unexpected with our birthmom and Owen. Shocker! Holy cow. No time to prepare. They met us, gave me the most beautiful necklace lei, a hat lei, Liam a hat lei and Ryan a flower necklace lei. It seemed so sad for Glorina [our birthmother] to hand over Owen to me. It broke my heart to see the pain in her eyes! She cried, didn't speak. They stayed for about a half-hour and visited looking at the photo album I made for her about us. Her grandma [Bubu], aunt, and three other relatives were there with her. Her grandmother [Bubu] seemed so happy to see us. I cannot imagine how hard it is to hand over a baby after three-months, they must really love him to do this for him! I didn't want him, or them all to leave!
We went to Payless with Camilla after our birthmother left. We spent $200 on nothing. Cereal is $6 a box. All the fruit is rotten, how do all the people survive here? We bought sheets. The pillows in our apartment are made out of beans, what??Ryan says that this apartment we are staying in is worse then the apartments he stayed in on his mission in Venezuela. Our apartment is gross! Cockroaches and dirt are everywhere, lizards too! The airport was totally shocking...so small. There was a parade welcoming the plane, cars driving by and honking. It was really neat to see how excited the people are for visitors....I want to bring all these kids home. I think its 6:30 am here. We don't really know what time it is. It's so hot I can't even wear makeup. The shower is so dirty, I dont even want to take one. We have no food. My mom would die if she saw how we will be living here. It is so humbling."

Day 2 in the Marshall Islands
December 8th 2008
We woke up to a rooster crowing at like 4. Because of the time difference, I did not sleep at all because I felt like we were going to wake up late and miss all that we had to do that morning. I remember waking up at 6am, or so I thought...it really was like 4 am. Needless to say, I was more than ready to get our baby and we had SO Much to do before we got him. Camilla, the rep from the adoption agency picked us up at 8:30 am to bring us to find a rental car. The apartments we were staying at was supposed to reserve one for us, but forgot to. We ended up finding one without cockroaches and bugs all in it at Hertz...thankfully!!
2nd. we had to bring Owen to Dr. Pinano, the doctor that the US Embassy picks for us to go to for our adoption physical. To me, it was really a waste of time because he hardly even looked at Owen before signing the papers. He completely missed the fact that Owen had scabes behind his ears. But our papers were signed and we were ready for court. Owen weighed 14 pounds 8 ounces. Juli, the lady adopting at the same time as us did everything with us, so it was great to experience all this newness together.
.

Juli, her birthmother, Liam, Owen and Me...

Taken from Journal Entry on December 8th, 2008:

"At Dr. Pinano's, I held Owen, fed him a bottle and he was just adorable. He is so quiet and meek. Such a good and content baby. I gave him his first pacifier and he loved it!! He sucked on it and fell asleep in my arms. My heart seriously melted looking at him!. . . I forced myself to give Owen back to his great-grandmother because I know her time is limited with him. It really breaks my heart to take him away from his family and this amazing culture. They are just so amazing and just really want him to have a better life, and that makes them more amazing!"

This is Owens Bubu...his great-grandmother. She was Owen's primary caregiver while his birtmother was in school. She came along to the doctor's appointment with us. He was so attached to her and she was the most loving person I have ever met!
After the pre-adoption stuff was completed, we just had the rest of the day to wait, wait and wait...Liam learned how to do this at lunch that day....
We were pretty busy setting up our US Embassy appointment, getting passport photos done for Owen, and getting ready to apply for his passport, but we did it and every step was a step closer to getting Owen.

Later that day, we were in our apartment unpacking and cleaning and our Birthmother knocked on our door and asked us to babysit Owen while she went and met with the Lawyer. She handed him to me and left. I was more than excited at getting alone time with Owen for the very first time. It really was the best thing that could have happened. I gave him a bath, cut his finger nails, and took a million pictures of him. Ryan and Liam were in awe of him as well. It was just such a weird feeling to have the baby you are going to adopt, but know that he is not mine yet. I was worried that his birthmom would be offended if I changed his clothes, or cut his fingernails. And I was too scared to get too attached because she still had another day that she could change her mind and decide to parent. We had him for about an hour before she came back and got him.

Here are some of the pictures I took that afternoon...

Me and my two boys for the very first time!!
The happiest mom ever!!

Day 3
December 9th, 2008
Court 2:00 pm
I woke up super early again as I couldn't sleep again with all the excitement of finalizing our adoption as well as the confusion from the time change. The day consisted really of just a lot of waiting since our court was not until 2:30 pm.
We met the lawyer at 9:00 am to go over our dossier and the questions we would be asked in court. Court was a lot more intense than Liam's adoption and we really had to think about our answers to the questions we were asked.

We picked up our birthmother and Owen before court and brought here there with us. There were some hangups with our contact from the adoption agency promising to pick up our birthmothers family and not doing it, so thanfully we were early enough that we had time for someone to go back and get them. They were all dressed so nice. They made me a flower lei again for my head, and I wore it throughout court. They were so kind and welcoming to us all and saw this day as a day to celebrate us joining their family.
Before court:
Owen and his two mommies...

This is by far my favorite and most emotion picture of Owen and his birthmom. It is just so sweet and intimate to me as he buries his head in her shoulder.

The courtroom - before the judge came in. I love the picture behind the judges stand. The Marshall Islands flag is up there as well.

This one is my other favorite picture. It just has so much emotion in it for me.
Court was over faster than we thought. Our birthmother went up first. The lawyer asked the question in English. The translator translated it into Marshallese. Glorina answered in Marshallese, and sometimes English, and the translater stated what she had said back into English. They do this to make sure she fully understands what is going on.
The questions we were asked were interesting. They asked me about my infertility, Ryan about his job. The judge even asked Ryan during court if he would consider the Marshall Islands for Wind Energy. He then granted our adoption, and we were done!! Owen was ours.
We took pictures downstairs under the courthouse while we waited for them to process our adoption decree. These next pictures are some of them...
Owen's Bubu, his birthmom's Aunt Glorinda, and Owen
Glorina's Aunt, Glorina, Bubu, Glorinda holding Owen, Liam and Me
(Ryan was taking the pictures, so he wasn't in any)

The cutest little boy was playing in the dirt below the courthouse. I took a picture of him and scared him. He started crying...sorry kiddo...
After court, we rushed to the birth certificate office so that we could overnight our papers the same day to the US Embassy in Manila, Phillippines right after our US Embassy appointment the next morning. The birth certificate office was crazy. They had all their documents in cardboard boxes sitting on shelves...no computer files at all. They could not find Owens, so we had to come back the next day.
We brought Glorina and her family out to dinner at a local restaurat called Dar. Attorney Benjamin came along and we had a great time with them. The food was really good! Liam was having a hard day. A lot was going on and he was pretty cranky. It must have been hard for him to be in another country, adjust to the time change, and get a new baby brother all at the same time.
Owen and Bubu at the restaurant.Glorina was great at making Liam laugh. She played with him for most of dinner.

Big brother....finally!
Owen and his birthmom!
After dinner, we went back to Glorina's home. Where she lived was a transition home from families from Jaluit (her Island) that came to Majuro. Many families lived there and there were tons of little kids that I completely fell in love with! We thought it would be the perfect place to donate all the stuff we had brought from our clothes drive that I did on my blog...
we ended up with way more than I expected and I am so thankful to everyone that donated items or money to us to be able to touch these childrens lives! I especially want to thank Chan Cunningham from Utah who arranged a clothes/item drive in her church there and mailed us 14 boxes of stuff to hand out while we were over there! It was just so amazing and the best feeling to be able to give these people these gifts!
We ended up with the following items:
112 pairs of shorts
222 shirts
37 dresses
18 pairs of pants
10 hats
38 pairs of shoes
20 womens underwear
a case of ramen noodles
15 onesies
216 childrens books
box of candy and batteries
box of toiletries (tampons, soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc.)
Thank you again to everone that donated!!!!!!
We gave the items to our birtmother's Bubu to distribute. She said that she was going to make sure that each child only got one out fit, so that there was enough to go around. (We saw kids walking around the island in the clothes brought several times while we were there...she she did try to get them around)
They dont have electricity, but they were so excited to go through the items in the dark that evening. They had one candle that barely lit up the room. They were so excited to go through the clothes. It made me so sad to see how poor they were and how humble they are. They kept telling us "Kommol Tata" which means "Thank you very much" in Marshallese. I only took these 2 pictures because I felt uncomfortable taking more at the time...
These next pictures are some of the kids that I completely fell in love with! They live at the same place where Owen lived for the first three months of his life! Some of them are related to him. I just think they are the most beautiful children I have ever seen and they are amazing kids. Whenever we would drive up, they would run up to the car and beg for Liam...he played with them a ton and loved it!
This is Owen's birth family:
his great aunt, his aunt, his bubu, his birthmother, uncle, and grandmother.

This is inside where they live.
Liam and Glorinda

Boy looking through the window to see Liam...
It was pretty neat when we first walked into their home, their wall was covered in pictures from the Ensign. They had Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, and other LDS Church pictures. It was just interested to see that they had all these and they were not even LDS, they are Protestant. They told us it was from the guy that lived there before them, but they liked it so they kept it up.

After we got home that night, this was our first attempt at a family picture on our first day as a family of four!! We tried and failed, but I just think they are so funny to look at.

Owen slept in his carseat that night because we didn't have a crib or anything else for him to sleep in at the apartment we were at.

That was the end to our first day with Owen!!!

Day 4
December 10th, 2008
U.S. Embassy Appointment
We had a busy day planned as we had to get Owen's passport, finally got his old and new birth certificates, meet with the U.S. Embassy at 3:00 pm and get all of our papers together and to DHL by 5:00 pm. We enjoyed our first morning with Owen, and I again pretended to be a photographer and took a million pictures of him and Liam.
Owen on his first morning as a Waters...

Brothers!

Outside the U.S. Embassy. We couldn't bring the camera in, so we didn't get to take any photos.

The Embassy appontment went well. Our birthmother was there as well and she held him and was so happy to see him! Our laywer had met us at the Embassy to walk us through everything and later told us that he had a friend at the Marshall Islands Resort that would give us a great rate. That night, we left our dirty, cockroach infested apartment and moved to a decent hotel room with an Ocean view balcony for the rest of our trip. It was such a relief just walking into the hotel and it felt much more comfortable.

Day 5

Sightseeing
Since our paperwork was overnighted, all we had left to do was wait for our papers to be processed at the Embassy in Manila, Phillippenes. We went sightseeing and had a great time touring the island on our own.

This is the very tip of the Island. It is just so amazing here!!

So, this is the end of Part two...just thinking that I have only written about 5 days and I was there for almost 5 weeks mean that I still have a lot more blogging to go!! Since I am done with my college, I think I will have more time to blog now!!

so, to be continued....

Big Week For Owen!

Posted by Danielle

Rolling, Rolling, Rolling...

Last Saturday, Ryan was playing with Owen in the living room and he rolled over for the very first time...then continued to roll front to back and back to front...it's like he just realized that he knew how to do it and won't stop. I was so sad that I missed it, but glad that Ryan experienced it. Later that day, my good friend Bonnie was watching Owen and Liam while I went to a doctor appointment and he rolled over several times for her....I finall say him roll over the next day myself and he hasn't stopped since. He will lay on the floor and roll across the room to get whatever toy he is looking for. He loves his new found freedom and is so happy to be able to move himself.

Sitting up...

Owen has been what the doctor calls "tripod-ing" which mean sitting up by himself with his arms between his legs, like a tripod...for like a good few weeks. This week he started sitting independently, for like minutes at a time, which is so exciting. He still can be kinda off balance at times and fall over when reaching for something, but he is sitting up really straight without "tripod-ing" most of the time....its just so exciting!!!

First tooth...

Owen's first tooth popped through today!! I felt his gums and his tooth was finally there. He has been teething forever it seems like and we finally have some progress. He is almost 8 months-old and the time is going by so quickly!! It is the bottom front left tooth...yay!!

Big-Brother...

Liam is just learning so much. We have been working on colors and numbers lately. He counts thirteen by himself, and then starts to jumble up the numbers afterwards...He has learned all his colors and is doing great with his shapes. He knows triangles, squares, rectangles, circles, stars, hearts, and is beginning to learn all the other shapes as well. He has known his alphabet for a long time and we have started learning his lowercase. He sings the ABC song all the time and loves to sing the "Owen Thomas" song to Owen when he starts to cry. I just love it! He says, "Don't cry baby brother, don't cry" and then starts to sing this silly song I made up and sing to Owen....to the tune of that Where is thumbkin song...

Owen Thomas, Owen Thomas, I love you, I love you, You are such a good baby, Just like your brother Liam, Go to sleep, Go to sleep.... I had made up the same song for Liam when he was a baby and would sing it to him, so he thinks its neat that both he and Owen have their own song. Sometimes I change it up a bit, but Liam sings it all the time to Owen. He also loves to sing Popcorn Popping, Daddy Comes Home, Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star, Jesus Wants me for A Sunbeam, and a few other of his favorite songs....I sometimes can't believe how much info that 2 year-old has in his head...he is just so smart to me.

We bought the game Memory for his Easter basket today and we played it as a family tonight. He was amazing at it. He was just so good at remembering where the cards were, I was pretty shocked. Liam is a little genious! It was really funny when he flipped a card over that had a picture of a chocolate-chip cookie on it. He said "mmm...these are my favorite" and rubbed his belly. It was so funny, Ryan and I both started laughing.

On the other note, Liam and Owen have become great friends/brothers/playmates... Liam loves to entertain and Owen loves to be entertained!! He absolutely loves to watch Liam dance around and Liam loves the reactions he gets from Owen. It's just such a pure joy to watch them make eachother laugh. It is just one of those mom moments when you look at your kids and your heart just fills with love and pure joy! I just love my boys so much!!

Dear Owen.

You have now been in our family for three months exactly; almost half of your life so far. You are the sweetest baby and are always full of smiles and laughs! You are just starting to sit up by yourself and love your exersaucer and jumperoo, your swing not so much though...you scream when I try to put you in there. You are extremely observant and love to look and be outside. You are absolutely adored by your big brother Liam and he LOVES having you as a baby brother. He begs me every single day to wake you up from your naps so he can play with you. He is so affectionate towards you and can make you laugh like no one else. You watch him with big admiring eyes, and I love to see the two of you laugh together.

Your mommy and daddy are so happy to be your parents and feel so extremely blessed to be able to have adopted you! We seriously are the luckiest parents ever for having you! You are so attached to your mommy and will not sleep unless you are touching her. As I write this, you are laying on my lap sleeping. If I put you down, you would start crying in about 5 minutes. But to be honest, I absolutely love every minute that I have with you and want you to stay little forever so I can hold and cuddle with you. You make the cutest noises and sighs when you are sleeping. My favorite is when I pick you up and you sigh a sigh of relief that I am holding you! It is my favorite noise!

We love you so much Owen and are so happy that it has been 3 months of pure joy that we have had you in our family!!

Love,
Mommy and Daddy

Today...

Posted by Danielle

Today we went to the doctors office. After our appointment, I asked Liam to say goodbye to the doctor. He turned around, waived to her and said, "G'bye. Love you" which sounds more like "wuv you". It was so cute. He is such a sweet boy!!

He is also getting so observant of what is going on around him. After the doctor appointment, we went to the Parent Resource Center (like an indoor play place for kids). I was talking to another mom about her son's rainboots that he wants to wear every day. I told her that Liam was the same way, always wanting to wear his cowboy boots, every single day. Liam turns around, looks at her, and says to her, "yeah, like Ben" (his cousin in Kentucky that wears cowboy boots every day). He totally just chirped in on our conversation...I was just so surprised that he was listening, and really understanding what we were talking about. He is growing up so fast!!

On another note, Owen ate a full jar of carrots baby food tonight at dinner. He was so excited and cried if I did not shovel it in his mouth fast enough. He is so much fun!!
